Trophy for the Winner

Trophy is an award given to winners belonging to various professions for their significant achievements in their respective fields. It is a formal recognition of their merit and contribution. Normally, trophies and awards are associated with sports where sports persons are given trophies for various competitions. This could be given at the school level as well as at the professional level in all sports. Often a trophy is more than just an award, it is a legacy that the winners cherish even after years of winning the title. Thus, winning a trophy is not only a matter of pride for the winner but also a great memory to cherish in the years to come.

Along with sports trophy a winner is also awarded sports medals made of gold, silver or bronze. In the ancient times, a trophy used to be a mark of victory. The word trophy originated from the French word trophee which when translated meant prize of war. The word trophy has its root in the Latin word trophaeum, in the Greek word tropaion and the root word is trope. It is interesting to learn about the history of the word. And now we know when trophies and awards were first made.

In the earlier days, in Greece, trophies were made of arms and standards of dead enemies that were then hung upon a big tree to look like a warrior. These trophies and awards would have story of the battle written on it and were subsequently given as offerings to various gods in ancient Greece. The Romans on the other hand liked to safeguard their trophies and awards; hence they built trophies that glorified their achievements. Today most of these magnificent trophies have been stolen and that is a shame for the civilized society. We find that the trophy has always held a place of great importance in the ancient as well as modern times.

Trophies have different shapes and sizes. A trophy can have the shape of two-handled cups, mugs or bowls with engravings on them. The trophy can be a statue, be in the shape of an animal or some special architecture accompanied with special words, pictures and numbers. Trophies and awards are normally made of metals, wood with wooden bases but with the changing times they are with plastic material with a marble base. This is required in order to have a quality trophy, which is not too expensive because if it is too costly then it may not be used and may have very little demand.
